How to Become a Grateful Coach

To be a great coach that empowers his or her team, you have to adopt the mindset of coaching. Become a coaching manager and help others be happy and thrive at work with these mindset shifts.

Hello, and welcome to Coaching For Managers. My name is Shawn Hunter, and I’ll be leading us on your journey to become a manager who’s also an exceptional coach. I’ve been researching and writing about excellent leadership and management for 20 years. And I can tell you from experience the incredible benefits to individuals, to teams, and to companies that come from great coaching. And the personal sense of growth and purpose that you gain from becoming a great coach who can build up those around you.


Now, you might be starting this journey with a strong interest in developing others with good instincts, like empathy and ability to listen deeply. But wherever you are now in your journey, this course will deliver the tools and the skills, the methods and the mindsets that you need to become a great manager who knows how to coach others to grow and thrive in their work and life.


Not everyone will say their job is a perfect match for their capabilities. I mean, actually most employees struggle to be happy at work and many consider their own managers to be kind of so-so. And you are about to change that in your work environment. When you learn to be a coaching manager, you become less interested in your own personal power and more interested in helping others be happy and thrive at work. You’ve worked hard to get where you are and now it’s time to shift to helping others.


Developing others is not about giving away your own power. It’s about empowering others. And the definition of empowerment is to make someone else stronger and more confident, especially in controlling their life and their work. As you know, people want more than money or positions or titles, they want to be themselves, use their strengths to the fullest, they want to work at something that has meaning, they want to feel safe and they want to connect with others in ways that are fulfilling, and they want to be happy at work. Yes, there’s a legitimate field of research that supports happiness as a personal. And yes, a business success factor.


Okay. Here’s some tips for adopting a mindset for coaching:

  • Think of yourself as a servant to your employees: you don’t need to be the all-powerful manager. People need you to serve them in their jobs, and this will be so much easier when you embrace your role of growing everyone in your path.
  • Understand yourself: coaching requires self-awareness. And if you don’t know your own strengths and weaknesses, you can’t recognize how your behavior impacts others. The best coaches are self-aware, vulnerable, and able to be role models. This means helping people with their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Be willing to study and do a little homework: unless you have been a coach for a long time, there’s a lot to learn, and this course will be a great starting point, if you’re willing to do the work, ask questions, take some risks, and above all, be grateful for the opportunity. It really is quite a gift to be able to support others in their careers and their lives.
